Lima History and Culture

Last weekend we had fun taking a trip to the historical center of Lima on Saturday. It ended with a surprise that made the Little Lady very happy.

We have been to the center of Lima many times over the years. This was our first collective visit there on this trip. Every time we come to Lima the center gets better and better. More restoration is happening. And the basic stock of architecture and cultural heritage is fabulous. Here is a quick photo tour around the main square, La Plaza de Armas.

First, the presidential palace where the changing of the guard ceremony happens at noon everyday but appears more elaborate on holidays and weekends:

The main cathedral:

 And the municipal building:

We toured the cathedral and the archbishop's museum. We also visited the catacombs at the San Francisco Monastery. Lots of creepy bones there perfect for a four year old to ask lots of questions about. And there is also a nice plaza there full of overfed pigeons.

Perhaps the highlight for the Little Lady was a stop on the walk back to the bus at a classic children's clothing store. We, shall we say, became convinced to buy two beautiful dresses at El Cesitar, a classic shop providing fancy dresses and suits for children attending formal events, particularly religious ceremonies. She wanted just the pink one (at the left of the last photo below). In reality her dad insisted on the blue one at the top of the second photo as an extra. I could not pass up the amazing value that these quality dresses provide. The Little Lady wore the blue dress, which she decided was actually her favorite (dads know these things), to a concert the very next night. I will tell you about that show in the next post.
